Hawaii: The Day After Tomorrow: packing woes

Well, it's almost here. Our first "working vacation". Our first month long trip away...anywhere.

4 Weeks in Hawaii. 4 WEEKS IN HAWII!

Holy Moly. We've been planning this lifestyle for years now. To have it right before our eyes is kind of...well, it's kind of...FREAKING EXCITING!

What am I dreading most? (clue: headline gave it away).

Packing.

Why Packing you ask?

Ok...I (Kerry) have been researching how other digital nomads before me have pulled this "way of life" off. One of their tricks is...drum roll...Packing Light.

AAAAHHHHH.

What???

I don't know how to pack light. Does ANY woman know how to pack light?? Well, apparently...yes.

So I have decided to pack lightly. The basic concept seems to be...don't pack for more than 1 week, no matter how long you are traveling for.

One week...ummmm...Ok.

Apparently it's easier to wash a weeks worth of laundry along the way in your travels than to lug everything you can think of that you might need.

Ok...so only one week of clothes. I have to admit, that as we get closer to the departure date I'm starting to have a bit of strange anxiety over this task. How in the heck am I going to go from a 2 suitcase kinda girl to ONE LIGHT CHECK-IN BAG. AHHHHHHH.

I'm going to do it though! I am...I am ...I am.

Wish me luck.

OH...and Randy has snickered at me when I talk about this "packing light" thing...so I don't think he believes I can do this...so seriously...

Wish me luck. ;)

Learning Lessons

Kerry says:

I have been studying this lifestyle for a while now. One of the things I've learned, yet worries me more than a bit, is the Travel Light philosophy. Up until reading this I can honestly say I have never traveled light in my life. I had no idea that was part of this lifestyle either. LOL

I do now though, and I want to get good at this...so...in one week...when we go to Hawaii for a month...I plan on starting to practice.

They say to pack for no more than a week, no matter how long you travel for. Then you wash the clothes often. They say that's easier than heavy packing and lugging your bags all over the place. Some say that if you can figure out  how to pack only a carry on that you're doing even better. That is supposed to be ideal.

I really don't think I can get away with only a carry on at this point though. I am going to try very hard, however, to honor this Travel Light philosophy and I will be practicing.

What if I need something I didn't bring? What then? Oh NO!

They say that if you need something you didn't bring to just have a small budget, from $100 to $200 per trip, for buying the item(s) while you're traveling. Need a fancy dress, but didn't bring one...voila...new fancy dress bought in some awesome destination. Hmmmm...that sounds fun.

So, I will be trying very hard to pack lightly. I laugh as I type this, because I have my doubts. LOL.

I don't worry about Randy's packing. He's been traveling for business for years, and I've seen him fit a weeks worth of crap into the smallest of carry ons. He's already a master of this philosophy.

I'll try and remember to take a picture of my suitcase when I'm done...so you guys can rate how well you think I did.

Happy Travels!

Our First Post...how EXCITING!

Some of you have heard us going on about travel after the kids have grown.

Well, the kids have grown up!

Now what?

Randy and I have decided, that indeed, we will be beginning the transition into long term nomadic travelers. No more week vacations for us.

We are starting with a month long trip to the Big Island of Hawaii!!!

We have a two bedroom two bath house ON THE BEACH in Pahoa for the entire month of October.

Only 8 more days and we leave!

We are very excited...not only because we are going to Hawaii for a month (which of course is majorly exciting) but also because this is our FIRST long term trip. The first of many we have planned.

We are starting this blog, and a facebook profile, and a twitter account and a separate email account...all under Flinders Travels...so that you, our friends and family, can keep track of us.

We hope you will all enjoy the upcoming antics and pictures we will be posting about.
